That shade of lipstick may look smashing on you right now, but it won’t when it causes your lips to swell twice their size because you continued to use it way past its prime.  In time, makeup can collect bacteria which can cause irration; it can also lose its potency.  Here is a guide to determine when to say goodbye to kikay kit and shower/vanity table staples.

liquid foundation: 1-2 years
cream or pancake foundation: 6 months
face powder: 2 years
concealer or cover stick: 1 year
bronzer: 1-2 years

mascara and liquid eyeliner: 4-6 months (or risk eye infections)
eye shadow (powder): 3 years
eye shadow (cream/gel): 6 months
eye pencil: 3 years; sharpen before each use to prevent bacteria contamination

blush (powder): 2 years
blush (gel-type): 6 months-1 year

lipgloss: 9 months/ when product’s smell turns rancid
lip liner: 3 years; sharpen before each use to prevent bacteria contamination
lipbalm/lipstick: 2-3 years/ when product’s smell turns rancid
sponges: 1-2 months; wash weekly
brushes: wash every 2-3 months with a mild detergent or baby shampoo

cream and gel cleansers: 1 year
anti-aging and acne treatments: 3 months-1 year/ when product changes color
sunscreen: look for expiration date on the bottle
perfume: 2 years
nail polish: 1-2 years

bar soap: 3 years
shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel: 3 years
bath oil: 1 year
body lotion: 2-3 years
hairstyling products: 3-5 years
shaving cream: 2 years
deodorant: 2 years
